(93) Amiable as his Lieutenant Gordon may be, Gary Oldman has made a career of playing villainous sleazebags. Never does he fill the role so perfectly as in this film, and – in this instance – he is far from the exception. The Professional is a crossroads at which many of its contributors found themselves reaching respective peaks in their careers. Luc Besson is at his finest both as a writer and director, Natalie Portman jump-starts her career with a killer sophomore performance, and Jean Reno steps effortlessly into the character he was born to play.
