Sleeping Beauty (1959)

Sleeping Beauty (1959)(92) Sleeping Beauty is a monumental entry in the Disney oeuvre – differing from earlier classic in significant ways. For starters, it’s hardly a musical at all. Instead, the score focuses on Tchaikovsky’s classical composition and one central song. It employs a Gothic proto-renaissance style (which extends to the line art) in gorgeous backdrops that stretch across an ultra-wide Panavision frame. Malificent, in all her hideous, beautiful forms is a perfect Disney villainess, and her neon green flames splash across the rich, vivid color palette that’s used to its fullest in this beautiful film.
