Planet of the Apes (1968)

Planet of the Apes (1968)(91) The prosthetics may look a little dated now but those Oscar-winning makeup techniques are the only element of this science-fiction classic that isn’t as potent and viable as on Apes’ first screening. A brilliant score by Jerry Goldsmith (ranked 18th of all time by the AFI) punctuates the film’s entertaining, socially relevant storyline as well as brilliant performances from Heston and company. The screenplay, originally penned by Twilight Zone creator Rod Serling, features a twist-ending that outdoes even that of Monkey Planet, the Pierre Boulle novel the film is based on.
