(87) Rise did an excellent job of bringing Apes into the 21st Century, and it featured great performances all around. Dawn builds on that foundation in almost every way. It is – at its core – a heartfelt family story, and one of betrayal. It is also a powerful anti-war narrative. Dawn‘s relationships are rich in complexity and, when they break down, the violence that ensues is both hellish and spectacular. Bested only by the 1968 original, Dawn is not only a good Apes film, but a great movie altogether.
