(96) Having just watched the stateside theatrical release of Blade Runner for the first time, I’m now able to empathize – in part – with the lukewarm reaction the film received upon initial release. Even in its most disfigured state, however, Ridley Scott’s near-future noir remains visually and conceptually arresting. Moreover, his personally preferred “Final Cut” and even the original international version represent one of the most influential and sincere science-fiction works of the twentieth century. Blade Runner is perhaps the only Philip K. Dick adaptation that can be argued as a true equal to its written source material.
