The Ladykillers (1955)

The Ladykillers (1955) (86) A brief glance at their track record might lead you to believe that the Coen brothers can do no wrong by film. One thing they weren’t able to achieve was recapturing the magic of this Alexander Mackendrick classic. While their remake was mired by a complexity expected of modern capers, much of the charm of this original version resides in how beautifully simple it is. Ladykillers succeeds as a comedy – entertaining, intriguing, and finding the funny bone – with little more than a handful of laugh-out-loud moments.
