Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

Empire Strikes Back (1980) (95) After Star Wars turned an entire generation of viewers into fanboys it must have seemed hopeless to try to replicate that theatrical experience. George Lucas realized this when he went about producing a continuation which is anything but a retread. Empire is dark, brilliant, and best of the series in almost every conceivable way: The script is rock solid, Kershner’s composition makes frames from the first look lackadaisical, and the Vader plot twist is among the most memorable in all of cinema. Only The Godfather: Part II holds contention with this for greatest film sequel.
