(89) It may wear its influences on its sleeve, but Joker bares so much emotion that it’s tough to withhold praise for originality. Warner certainly gambled on releasing such a dark and layered picture as comic book fare, but it’s paid off in spades. Joaquin Phoenix again proves his devotion to crafting a performance, and the entire cast follows suit admirably. There’s hardly a moment you can’t imagine was the product of many takes. Solitary as it is, Joker still makes effort to weave itself into the greater DC universe.
