(78) Gareth Edwards delivers on his promise of an American Godzilla more in line with the original than Emmerich’s ’98 attempt. In fact, this feels more like the 1954 classic than many of the numerous sequels. Godzilla himself is giant, unstoppable, and genuinely awe-inspiring – the very monster we grew up on. Unfortunately, the human characters are also the ones we grew up on. Bland dialogue, missed thematic opportunities, and an undeveloped protagonist squander the efforts of an excellent cast.
