Bride of Frankenstein (1935)

Bride of Frankenstein (1935) (90) “A good cast is worth repeating,” the film proclaims before its closing credits. Karloff and Clive return to their roles from Frankenstein and are joined by Ernest Thesiger as Dr. Pretorius. Thesiger adds extra flavor to an already exceptional cast and his character escalates Frankenstein’s ambition. Along with raised narrative stakes comes more comedy, more destruction, more elaborate make-up and set design, more of everything except subtlety. As Pretorius says, “why not?” Bride of Frankenstein is Universal horror’s premier director doing some of his best work with their biggest star.
